“Archaeologists at the necropolis of Saqqara, near Cairo, have unearthed a cache of around 250 ancient Egyptian mummies and a diverse collection of bronze statues. Discovered in a pit, these exquisitely preserved artifacts date back to approximately 150 ancient tombs. Journalists attended Monday’s press event, organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, to witness the unveiling of the stunningly well-preserved sarcophagi. The collection also includes various bronzes, depicting Egyptian deities such as Anubis, the god of death, and the sun god Amun, alongside two wooden statues of the deities Isis and Nephthys, adorned with gilded faces.

“They were in a seated position [by one coffin], one of them by the head of the coffin and the other by the feet, in a position called ‘the mourners’ or ‘weepers’ for the deceased,” Mahmoud Al Saiedi, the mission’s director, told CBS News.

The sarcophagi are destined for the Grand Egyptian Museum, scheduled to open near the pyramids of Giza in November.”
